This is what I built today (it's a coat rack for the back entryway). Unfortunately, I had to jimmy-rig it as I seem to have been incapable of following the basic instructions on what materials I needed to get to make this.
Apparently a 1"x10" board is NOT the same as a 2"x10" board. So I took the scrap end, cut it in half, and made a faux 2"x10". As pretty as this looks, it's probably too heavy to actually hang on a wall without some serious wall anchoring going on.
But at least it looks pretty.
[I now have a 2"x10", so I'll do it right this time. Maybe.]
